About Unix Timestamps

A Unix timestamp is the number of seconds since January 1, 1970 00:00:00 UTC (the Unix epoch). Key points:

  • Always in UTC timezone
  • Used widely in programming and databases
  • Independent of timezone conversions
  • 32-bit timestamps will overflow in 2038
  • Millisecond timestamps are 13 digits (divide by 1000)

Example: 1609459200 = January 1, 2021 00:00:00 UTC
